A Teaching Life

The Guest House

Jan 14, 2026 by Frank Thoms

Can we do this recognizing how difficult it is, how often we will fail? Can we accept our weaknesses, shortcomings and still hold onto Rumi’s wisdom? His “guest house” asks us to accept our frailties, give us hope––a template for us.

As a teacher, imagine yourself as Rumi’s guest house,” welcoming you and your students every day. It may be a struggle in today’s challenging circumstances. Hardly a day passes without feeling perplexed, baffled by what’s happening in our culture, with your students and colleagues––and in your mind. Think what laughter could do.

Rumi invites all of us to ponder his guest-house wisdom. It would be wonderful to be in a school, in a job, where acceptance of each one no matter how everyone shows up, “be grateful for whoever comes, because”––as Rumi concludes––“each has been sent as a guide from beyond.”

A guide from beyond?

(Google his poem, “The Guest House.” It’s worth it.)
