Marcel Proust, Discovery
In her classroom, a girl in the second row, delights with curiosity, listens closely, but some days, she disappoints. A boy in the back, sometimes confrontative, often drifts, inviting her to see anew and be there with him. She remains in sync to both of them, with all her children. She is a teacher “with the eyes of another,” knowing “of a hundred universes that each of them see.”
In these troubled times, would that all of us, especially those of us in charge, were willing to see with the eyes of the other. To recognize the other’s viewpoint. They are part of us. Our priority is to reach beyond ideologies, points of view, beliefs, beyond what we know. We remain open to discover from others what we may surely be missing, hoping that we come to see what they are seeing. We ask. We listen. We wait. We learn.
