Public schools are integral to communities. They serve to bring children together, to learn together, to know one another from diverse backgrounds, that everyone counts. They learn to speak up for themselves, for their ideas, for their values and concerns.
Public schools have been the backbone of America. Instituted in the early 20th century after the one-room-schoolhouse era, they have had their struggles and growing pains. They may not have been perfect but their doors have been open to every child. Now many children are no longer coming, instead they are staying home or attending subsidized voucher schools whose values are skewed towards one group.
Public schools are essential to America, essential to its diversity. Speak up for them in any way you can. Cory Booker showed how conviction can make a difference. Each time we speak up we are acting as a thread in the fabric of resistance. Together we will move the needle.
